Hello Students, Parents, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and everybody else in the OLG family!
It took a couple of years, but I am pleased to say, Welcome to Our Lady of Guadalupe School’s Music web page!
For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Mr. Hazen, the school’s music teacher. I have spent my time at OLG developing the music curriculum and in the future will publish all of the musical goals that we accomplish throughout the year.
The following is a very abbreviated, grade-by-grade breakdown of the year.
Learning to appreciate music as an organized activity, learn music basics (pitch, beat and tempo, instruments and their sounds), mimic rhythms using body percussion and sing age appropriate songs from memory.
More of the above, but more in-depth. Beginning of rhythm and note reading. We begin our journey as musicians and start to use instruments.
Continue note reading and introduce solfège (Do-Re-Mi). We will use the instruments more as we practice reading music. After Christmas we study The Orchestra and have our first ever test in music class!
We will learn how to read music notation. We have our first ever homework in music class! The reason we have this homework is for the “Melodica Using Student’s Introduction Challenge.” This is a mandatory test all 3rd grade students must pass, but once they do, we play the melodica!!!
Fully read music notation. Play the recorder!
Continue to play the recorder and increase our musical proficiency.
We begin to play the ukulele. Analyze music by listening. Be able to discuss what we hear. We also learn the history of music.
We continue to play the ukulele and learn about the history of popular music.
We finish our career as ukulele players and switch the focus to technology and music. We will use “Garage band” to understand and participate in the music production and recording process. That’s right, we will record our own music!
